Within six months, Nightingale and her team of 38 nurses transformed the hospital and the death rate dropped from 40 percent to 2 percent because of her work. Upon her arrival, the hospital was overcrowded, unsanitary and lacked medical supplies. The mortality rate was high, and the hospital was chaotic - even the number of deaths was not recorded correctly. When Florence Nightingale arrived at the British military hospital in Turkey in 1856, the scene was pretty grim. Florence Nightingale, one of the most note worthy applied statisticians in history, used her passion for statistics to save lives of soldiers during the Crimean War, and do groundbreaking work in data visualization that continues to be influential to this day. The lady with the lamp was also the lady who conducted pioneering and brave work as a statistician during a time when women were a rare presence in such fields. Now if I run ag pandoc in a folder, “pandoc” shows up in my search field in iTerm so I can quickly ⌘G through the results, and when I switch over to my editor, it shows up there as soon as I hit ⌘F. It simply takes the first argument from the command line and echos it through iTerm’s “CopyToClipboard” command, then runs the utility itself, in this case ag, using command to skip any functions or aliases of the same name (like this current one, for example). That’s ok, I rarely use grep directly.)īecause the meat of this is just a printf/echo command with the escape sequence, this is easily adapted to other shells (see below for a bash/zsh version). You can use a named clipboard to affect the rule, find, or font clipboards (blank to affect general clipboard). M1 does have some co-processors for certain tasks like handling Video encoding/decoding which makes them great for video editing, but if it is simply CPU based, the M1 reaches its limits rather early. This command takes any text output after it, up to an EndCopy command, and applies it to the clipboard. While the M1 is impressive in some ways, it is in no way competitive with a gaming PC. What didn’t make the 17 tracks chosen for Europe ’72can be heard in the Lyceum set, including the swinging “Chinatown Shuffle” and “The Stranger”, which both showcased the ailing Pigpen’s soulful, ragged croon. After some polishing, especially a few vocal overdubs (the tapes showed Garcia had been singing sharp for much of the tour), the takes heard on Europe ’72 became the landmark iterations of some of the Dead’s best-loved songs. As a result, on its release, the Europe ’72album was the first time anyone not at the shows got to hear songs such as “Tennessee Jed”, “Brown Eyed Women”, “Ramble On Rose”, “He’s Gone”, “Mr Charlie” and “Jack Straw” – songs that loosely brought together the traditions of country, folk and blues with the Dead’s mercurial, sparkling improvisations. This meant that the shows were full of new songs that had never appeared on an album. There’s also a limited-edition, 24LP boxset presenting all four shows the Dead played over consecutive nights at the Lyceum, each with a slightly different setlist and its own vibe.Īt the time, the Dead were in the middle of a three-year hiatus from the studio, but it was a golden period for new material, with both Garcia and Weir writing prolifically. The overlap, however, is considerable, for almost half of Europe ’72 comes from that Lyceum show. Now, three reissues to mark the 50th anniversary keep it relatively simple, with the original Europe ’72 remastered as a double CD and triple LP, and the final show of the tour at London’s Lyceum Theatre captured in its entirety as a 4CD set. Then came Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, a mammoth 73CD boxset containing every one of the 22 shows in full. In 2011 came Europe ’72 Volume 2, with 20 tracks not included on the first volume, prominent among them a legendary hour-long jam around “Dark Star” and “The Other One” from the rain-soaked Bickershaw Festival. On the 30th anniversary of the trip, Steppin’ Out With The Grateful Dead: England ’72presented a further 39 tracks from seven of the UK shows. It was the last with Pigpen, whose gritty, soulful vocals and R&B leanings balanced the cosmic visions of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, and the first with keyboardist Keith Godchaux and his wife and backing vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, the joint addition of whom made the music “warmer and more organic”, as Lesh put it.īefore the year was out, 17 tracks distilling peak moments from shows in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen had been released as the triple LP Europe ’72. The return lever is used for the light effects by default and not the “enter” function. The TW1867 is built with scroll knobs to control both brightness and volume and a nostalgic return joystick that gives the feel of a typewriter machine. If you prefer the classic typewriter style, however, there is also a complete metal design. The TW1867 wooden design gives a slightly different typewriter feel than other authentic designs. It’s not that bad if you have a smaller device or decide to use an external stand for the large tablet. Here, you must place the board on a hard surface to safely use your device, and the bracket can’t hold some heavy machines such as the iPad Pro 12. Theoretically, the metal bracket can hold up 2-3 devices all at once, but practically I find this bracket not as stable as that of the Qwerkywriter. You get with this board a decent 2000mA recharged the battery for about more than 10 hours after being charged full, which is great for extended typing and gaming use. You can connect the keyboard to the PC via USB cable or use the Bluetooth mode to connect your digital devices. The board has a wired-wireless toggle with nice indicator light for each connection mode. On the company’s site you can also get this board with quiet red or brown switches. The 7keys typewriter keyboard (TW1867) utilizes Outemu Blue Switches for excellent responsiveness, clicky sounds, and well-designed round keycaps. In my opinion, the white lights are a better fit for the overall typewriter design. The wooden version presented in the picture has white led lighting effects that are cool. The classic black version of this board has colorful lighting effects, which are pretty basic compared to other gaming boards but beautiful enough for such an authentic typewriter design. It’s one of the few models that look like a typewriter while having excellent build quality and impressive backlit effects. It has a fantastic design that emulates the old typewriter machine, a built quality that beats most of its competitors, and decent features for the lower price among premium typewriter keyboards. But this is a good example of how browser vendors can help users overcome usability problems in web design. ![]() This is not quite what I wanted when I asked websites to stop password masking. The release of Internet Explorer 10 in 2013 added a neat new feature: view password in cleartext while clicking a small icon in a field with otherwise-masked characters. Let's clean up the Web's cobwebs and remove stuff that's there only because it's always been there. This is very different from removing something users look for or introducing something they don't understand. Losing these features won't cause confusion, nor will their replacements: the new features will simply be clear text (in the first case) and a blank area where the destroy-my-work button used to be (in the second). Do what users expect, and they can concentrate their brainpower on understanding your products and offers instead of struggling with the user interface.īut password masking and Reset buttons are not something users actively seek out. Generally, I recommend adhering to conventions. In this respect, it's similar to another usability problem - having Reset buttons on forms, which is also something that should die. Password masking has become common for no reasons other than (a) it's easy to do, and (b) it was the default in the Web's early days. Your business will increase, and security will even improve a tiny bit as well. In most cases, however, users will appreciate getting clear-text feedback as they enter passwords. ![]() In cases where there's a tension between security and usability, sometimes security should win. It's therefore worth offering them a checkbox to have their passwords masked for high-risk applications, such as bank accounts, you might even check this box by default. Yes, users are sometimes truly at risk of having bystanders spy on their passwords, such as when they're using an Internet cafe. Both behaviors lead to a true loss of security. The more uncertain users feel about typing passwords, the more likely they are to (a) employ overly simple passwords and/or (b) copy-paste passwords from a file on their computer.(Or, in the case of intranets, increased support calls.) This double degradation of the user experience means that people are more likely to give up and never log in to your site at all, leading to lost business. Users make more errors when they can't see what they're typing while filling in a form. When you make it hard for users to enter passwords you create two problems - one of which actually lowers security: But the problem exists for desktop users as well. Password masking has proven to be a particularly nasty usability problem in our testing of mobile devices, where typing is difficult and typos are common. It's just you, sitting all alone in your office, suffering reduced usability to protect against a non-issue. More importantly, there's usually nobody looking over your shoulder when you log in to a website. So, password masking doesn't even protect fully against snoopers. Of course, a truly skilled criminal can simply look at the keyboard and note which keys are being pressed. Most websites (and many other applications) mask passwords as users type them, and thereby theoretically prevent miscreants from looking over users' shoulders. Showing undifferentiated bullets while users enter complex codes definitely fails to comply. ![]() Providing feedback and visualizing the system's status have always been among the most basic usability principles. It's time to show most passwords in clear text as users type them. |
